8 Ways the 2023 Accord Hybrid Leads Camry Hybrid & Sonata Hybrid

This model year the Honda Accord is an all new model. It’s been reworked from the ground up. This brings changes in nearly every aspect of the vehicle. The midsize sedan leads the class in size, competes in fuel economy, and makes a play for top performance.

Even so, the 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid and 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid are serious contenders. Here’s how the Honda Accord has positioned itself as the most well-rounded choice for the money.

front
  1. Rankings

The 2023 Honda Accord is once again the number one in midsize sedan rankings at US News and World Report. In fact, the critic ranking is 9 out of 10. At Kelley Blue Book, it is also ranked at #1 in the midsize car class.

Meanwhile, the Honda Accord Hybrid is ranked #1 among Hybrid Cars at US News. It has a critic rating of 9.5 out of 10. The sedan took home the Best Hybrid and Electric Car for Families award.

Car and Driver has named the Accord to its 10Best list. This is particularly significant this model year as the hybrid has been folded into the main Accord lineup. The midsize Honda has a 10 out of 10 critical score.

  2. Interior Refinement and Features

From more technology to more premium materials, the Honda Accord Hybrid is a cut above its rivals. This is especially true at the base trim level. Car and Driver has written that the Accord is doing an impression of a luxury car.

Every Accord cabin has more soft touchpoints and elegant trim materials. There’s a premium feel, even for the switches and controls. The clever dash design hides the air vents behind an attractive mesh.

Behind the steering wheel, a large instrumentation screen is standard. This is significant because it is not even available on the sedan’s rivals. The infotainment screen is the biggest two.

This 12.3-inch touchscreen is extra wide to allow for better split-screen use. Honda now has Alexa Built-in as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on all trim levels.

At higher trim levels, you’ll find more top amenities at lower prices. For instance, leather upholstery is standard on the tier-two EX-L Accord. You’d have to step up to 2023 Sonata Hybrid Limited trim or 2023 Camry Hybrid XLE to get this special treatment.

  3. Size, Spaciousness and Seating

Providing the biggest midsize sedan for the money, the new Accord Hybrid has grown bigger than ever. Not only does it have class-leading passenger volume, it has better seats. The front row now has body-stabilizing chairs that improve comfort levels on long trips.

The Accord’s best-in-class legroom is better than the Camry by 2.8 inches and ahead of the Sonata by a remarkable 6 inches. It’s easy to see which backseat will make the adult passenger most comfortable.

As for cargo space, Accord Hybrids have the biggest trunk of the bunch. This class leading space is 1.6 cubic feet bigger than the Camry and 0.7 cubic feet bigger than the Sonata’s trunk.

  1. Performance and Drivability

The 2023 Honda Accord and Accord Hybrid offer a better driving experience due to model year upgrades to the body and chassis. The four-wheel independent suspension has been returned for improved handling and smoother ride quality. The steering has been enhanced to provide better feedback.

A new dual motor setup on the Accord Hybrid provides class-leading torque. In fact, it is the only vehicle to have this unique hybrid powertrain layout. The two motors sit side by side on the same axle, and they work together to boost performance mile after mile.

    table

In terms of performance, the Accord and Camry Hybrids are about even in horsepower. The Sonata lags behind. As for torque, the Accord Hybrid has significantly more torque. No wonder Honda is the only brand of the three to publish a combined torque rate.

    table2

Honda’s regenerative braking is particularly sophisticated. Toyota regenerative brakes are quite different from normal braking, and that leads to a big learning curve.

  2. Driver Assistance

When it comes to safety and today’s driver aids, the three sedans are fairly similar on paper. These three rivals have standard adaptive cruise control, an autobrake system for forward collision dangers, and lane keeping assistance. It is surprising that you have to step up to the Camry Hybrid XLE to get blind spot monitoring and a rear cross traffic alert.

How well do these systems work? Once again the nod goes to the Accord Hybrid. 2023 Honda systems have been refined to see more and respond to more. The front camera range spans a 90-degree arc while the radar range covers a 120-degree arc.

This increased field of vision means it sees more car dangers, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcycles straight ahead and in junctions. It is more aware of lines and curbs, too.

These changes benefit adaptive cruise control as well as the autobrake and warning responses. Blind spot monitoring has a more extensive 82 feet of radar range. Lane follow assist and new traffic jam assist are especially refined. In the final analysis, Honda has the most modern and effective systems.

  1. Honda Exclusive Technology

Among its exclusive driver aids, only the Accord Hybrid has Honda’s road departure system. This can apply brakes or steering torque to assist the sedan if it starts to stray off the road.

Cornering brake control is a system built into the Accord to allow for safer cornering without necessarily lowering the speed. This happens by moving torque or braking to even out the wheelspin.

In a third example, the Accord rear view camera has three angles. This provides better coverage than rival back-up camera systems with one camera angle.

    table3

Lastly the Accord Hybrid has next generation airbags that have been refined for more effective deployment. Plus, there are ten airbags, one more than you’ll find on the Sonata Hybrid.

  2. Hybrid Sedan Fuel Economy

When it comes to fuel economy, the Honda is quite competitive. Most Honda Accord Hybrids have 19-inch wheels and earn 46 mpg in city driving. However, the Accord Hybrid EX-L models wear 17-inch wheels and earn 51 mpg on those same city streets.

    Hybrid Sedan Fuel EconomyComparison

    Trim Level City/Highway/Combined
Accord Sport & Touring 46/41/44 mpg
    Accord EX-L 51/44/48 mpg
    Camry Hybrid LE 51/53/52 mpg
Camry Hybrid XLE & up 44/47/46 mpg
    Sonata Blue 50/54/52 mpg
    Sonata SEL, Limited 45/51/47 mpg

Is better gas mileage needed at this point? The fuel calculator, offered by the US Department of Energy, shows the Accord Sport saves $3,250 in fuel costs over five years. Accord EX-L models save $3,750 in the same time period.

A shopper will need to stay mindful that only the base trim of the Sonata or Camry Hybrid can actually provide the top number promised. Choosing a higher trim will bring fuel economy more in line with the Honda Accord Sport.

  1. Price and Value Analysis

With three trim levels, the Sonata Hybrid price starts at $28,250. The Toyota Camry Hybrid price starts at $28,080. Toyota and Hyundai simply hold back on the good stuff to squeeze out a lower price. So the buyer ends up moving up the ladder just to get a decent touchscreen and other modern essentials.

The Honda Accord Hybrid is actually part of the Accord lineup, making it a true third-tier choice for a lucky buyer. The hybrid Accord starts at $31,895. As explained already, this top-ranked sedan earns a slight price difference by being a premium product.

Accord Hybrid Sports are providing the best cabin materials, more amenities, more technologies, a bigger cabin, and a bigger trunk than rivals. Plus the price includes more advanced systems, some unique driver assistance, and standard digital instrumentation.

As for cost to own, Kelley Blue Book praises this sedan for its low operating costs and excellent resale values. The industry analyst has declared it the Midsize Car Best Buy of 2023.

As you climb the trim ladder, Honda amenities continue to outpace the rivals and quickly shrink any apparent price difference. Only a step above the Sport, the EX-L offers a leather-clad cabin with all the trimmings.

Conclusion

With so much to recommend it and so many critics praising it, the 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid definitely pulls ahead of the 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid and 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid.
