Buckeye was established in 1877 by Thomas Newt Clanton. The Buckeye Canal was built through the city and was completed in 1886. This canal paved the way for economic growth and was where the city got its name. Transportation developments like the railway system and automobiles boosted growth further. Today, it is constantly on the list of the fastest growing cities in the US.
