2022 Honda Insight Review: Honda Hybrid Sedan
While hybrids have been slow to catch up in style, the 2022 Honda Insight exudes nothing but confidence. A certain interior sophistication elevates the Insight in its class.
Automotive journalist Edmunds ranks the Insight as number one in its class. Motor Trend ranks it at number two. What does it provide to earn such high marks?

Low Ownership Costs
Car and Driver praises the compact sedan because it has an affordable price as well as remarkable fuel economy. This makes it a better buy than many other hybrids that are high priced. Even better, it has a more customized premium interior than you would expect at this price point.
EPA estimates show that the EX trim level earns 55 mpg in the city and 49 mpg on the highway. That’s a combined fuel efficiency rate of 52 mpg. The Insight Touring earns 51 mpg city and 45 mpg highway. These powertrains can pause the gas engine at redlights to keep city fuel economy as low as possible.
Performance
The Insight has a stronger powertrain than its rival the Toyota Prius. The combined hybrid powertrain generates 151 horsepower. The AC Motor creates 197 pound-feet of torque.
A 1.5-liter engine is mated to a hybrid battery and an electric motor. This electric vehicle doesn't need to be plugged in because the battery is recharged by the electric motor and regenerative braking. It does go for about a mile on strictly electric power.
Placement of the battery pack achieves a low center of gravity that assists with agility. Handling is further enhanced by precise steering. The clever regenerative braking system can be adjusted with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. At the top setting, a driver can use one-pedal driving which allows the driver to lift a foot from the gas pedal to brake the Insight.
As Car and Driver writes, the brakes are confident like regular cars and not hesitant like some hybrid car brakes. The ABS 4-wheel brakes benefit from an emergency Brake Assist.
The Insight is pleasant to drive. The ride is well controlled, and a supple suspension maintains ride quality and ensures solid handling. A number of systems help with handling, including cornering brake control and a torque vectoring differential.
Size and Specifications
Seats are contoured with supportive foam to provide plenty of support. The interior measures 94 cubic feet. Front legroom is 42.3 inches and rear legroom is 37.4 inches. It is similar to the roomy Honda Civic.
A large center console is voluminous. A sliding, removable divider makes it even more useful. The dash has a rubberized pad to provide a safe spot for a smartphone.
The 2022 Honda Insight has a 15.1-cu ft trunk. The Touring trim has a slightly smaller space measuring 14.7 cu ft. Rear seats have a 60/40 split and can be released using convenient levers.
Honda Insight Trim Levels
The base LX trim has been supplanted by the well-equipped 2022 Insight EX base edition. It has the many crash avoidance features of Honda Sensing.
The dashboard has an excellent 8-inch touchscreen. The system includes HD Radio, Bluetooth, satellite radio, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. This infotainment system has been called “quick, sharp and easy to use” (Edmunds).
There are many helpful special features including two USB ports, keyless entry, push button start, and a remote starter. Automatic climate control regulates the air conditioning. A micro filter helps keep the ventilation system clean.
Even better equipped, the 2022 Honda Insight Touring has power-adjustable, power heated front seats. The classy cabin has leather upholstery and a moonroof.
Dashboard entertainment sounds even better with a 10-speaker audio system. A navigation system is built into the touchscreen. The automatic temperature controls are upgraded with dual-zone functions. Lastly, rain sensing wipers are added to the safety standards.
Safety Standards
Top safety ratings from the NHTSA and the IIHS indicate that this car is prepared to protect the occupants. Parents will be glad to know that the LATCH attachments earned a Good+ rating. That is a rare rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Even better, the Honda Insight 2022 model has 12 crash avoidance features. The forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking work with the driver to stay out of crash scenarios. Watching the sides of the car, the Insight has a lane keep assist, lane departure warning, blind spot monitor, and road departure mitigation.
Adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition and automatic high beam headlights are additional tools for the busy driver. The three-view rearview camera and rear cross traffic alert help with parking dangers. Additional parking equipment includes the available front and rear sensors.
Insight Colors
Exterior colors include metallics in Cosmic Blue, Lunar Silver, Modern Steele, and Radiant Red. There are also Pearls in Crystal Black and Platinum Pearl. The interior comes in black or ivory upholstery. There are cloth and leather choices.
Insight vs Toyota Corolla Hybrid, Prius Comparison
If you are comparing it to the Toyota Corolla Hybrid, you’ll notice that this hybrid has only 88.6 cu ft of interior volume. Its rear legroom is just 34.8 inches. Its trunk capacity is just 13.1 cu ft. So it has less space in every essential category when compared to the 2022 Honda Insight.
When it comes to the Toyota Prius, the interior volume is 93.1 cu ft, slightly less than the Insight. Furthermore, the Prius has only 33.4 inches of second row legroom, three inches less than the Insight.
Hondas have road departure mitigation as part of the standard crash avoidance features. This feature isn’t available on Toyotas.
