How is the CR-V eFCEV Different from Other Engines?
You can think of the CR-V e:FCEV as the next step in powertrains today. Let’s start at the beginning. The traditional Honda CR-V uses gas to produce power. It is different from the CR-V Hybrid which uses a gas engine, electric motors, and hybrid battery.
That, in turn, is different from a battery-electric vehicle like the new Honda Prologue. It uses a plug-in system to restore energy to its electric battery pack. That battery pack provides all the power to the Prologue’s electric motors.
This brings us back to the Honda CR-V e:FCEV. It uses its fuel cell module to store hydrogen. That hydrogen is then used to communicate power to the electric system. This is similar to the Toyota Mirai, Hyundai Nexo or Honda Clarity.
However, in addition to its hydrogen system, the CR-V e:FCEV powertrain has the unique ability to draw more power from plug-in charging. That’s different from the Toyota Mirai or Hyundai Nexo which are solely hydrogen vehicles. The Mirai and Nexo have no other source of power than hydrogen.
What is a Hydrogen Fuel Cell?
A hydrogen fuel cell is actually one of many that together can power a FCEV. There are many fuel cells to handle compressed hydrogen. This could be compared to the way battery-electric cars use lots of small batteries to store energy as part of a large battery pack.
With hydrogen, the process of fueling is quicker than waiting 20 minutes or more for an electric charge. Plus there are zero emissions. There are also zero emissions when hydrogen is used to produce power. The only discharge is a trickle of water.

Why is the Honda CR-V e:FCEV Available Only in California?
At present, California is the only state with hydrogen filling stations. As such, the few hydrogen fuel cell automakers have limited their sales to this area.
The goal is to expand hydrogen availability as has been done with electric recharging stations.
With the blending of plug-in and hydrogen capability, the Honda CR-V e:FCEV may be showing the world a new direction toward zero emissions.
