8 Reasons the 2023 Honda Civic is Better than the 2023 Toyota Corolla

The 2023 Honda Civic was a brand new model for 2022, and further refinements were made to the package this model year. The 2023 Toyota Corolla was a brand new model in 2020 with some changes in standard features, such as its dash tech, this model year.

JD Power notes that both are known for their excellent safety records and extensive driver aids which “outclass luxury cars”. Likewise, they tend to both have good resale values.

High performance editions include the Civic SI, Civic Type R, and GR Corolla, but the main goal of these small cars is to take care of a person’s everyday needs. If you are wondering which compac

front
  1. Critical Success

The 2023 Honda Civic took home the 2022 North American Car of the Year. This was its third win, making it the most winning car in NACTOY history. Previous wins were in 2006 and 2016. Neither the current Corolla nor prior ones have earned this prestigious award.

Leading the pack of compact cars at US News and World Report, the 2023 Honda Civic is rated #1 out of 11 cars. The 2023 Toyota Corolla has good reviews, but it only makes it to #5 on the same list.

Edmunds has declared the Civic as its Top Rated compact car for 2022 and again in 2023. Currently the car ranks #1, ahead of the Corolla which is ranked #6 out of 7.

  2. Value Package

Car and Driver recognized the vehicle for its driving experience as well as its outstanding value. These qualities helped place it on the prestigious 10Best list for 2023.

For a second year in a row, the Civic earned the 2023 Best Compact Car for the Money at US News and World Report. It is considered a well-rounded vehicle, earning praise for its spirited handling and its inviting interior.

In another two-year winning streak, the Honda earned 2023 Best Buy at Kelley Blue Book. The leading industry analyst liked the fact that there is more room in the cabin, the materials are higher quality, and the build quality is solid. Honda Sensing standards are especially good for the price tag.

The 2023 Civic is considered a Best Buy by Consumer Guide for the sixth year in a row. In 2022, it shared that designation with the Toyota Corolla.

  3. Resale Value

In its Best Buy review, Kelley Blue Book asserts that Civics will hold their resale value over time. You’ll find similar sentiments from JD Power. Civics drove away with the 2023 US ALG Residual Value Award for its class.

It’s not that the Corolla sedan isn’t good. It’s just that the Civic sedan keeps proving itself the best in the value and resale value categories.

  1. Drivability

Car and Driver writes that the Civic is fun to drive with the base engine, much less the turbo. Drivers will appreciate the balanced chassis and refined response. Accurate steering adds to the feeling of confidence.

US News and World Report echoes this assessment when it points out the “poised ride and handling.” Meanwhile Kelley Blue Book writes that the 2023 Civic is easy to drive, confidence-inspiring, and “engaging when we feel frisky.”

In contrast, US News and World Report calls the Corolla unexciting to drive. Edmunds complains about the slow acceleration. Their test drivers reported that they had to floor it to get enough acceleration in common high speed situations.

Perhaps it’s simply more fun because Civic turbo drivers command 180 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. 2023 Corolla drivers command only 169 horses and 151 lb-ft.

  2. Size and Spaciousness

With its new body, the Civic is longer than the Corolla by an inch. This allows it to have a bigger wheelbase as well. In the cabin that translates into a bigger passenger volume. JD Power writes that the larger cabin offers all-around comfort.

Civics have 37.4 inches of legroom for 2nd row passengers. Corollas offer only 34.8 inches. For those in the rear seats, the Civic is clearly the most welcoming to adults and teens.

Perhaps what is most compelling is the quality. More seating space is important, but the fact that the cabin materials are on the higher end really gives the Civic an edge. It’s just a better overall car with a more upscale vibe. The tech features are icing on the cake.

cargo
  1. Cargo Space

Honda sedans have significantly bigger trunks, too. Civics have a 14.8 cubic foot trunk while Corollas have a 13.1 cubic foot trunk. The difference is approaching two cubic feet, which is significant in this class.

As for the hatchbacks, the Civic Hatchback is more spacious than the Corolla Hatchback. This is most obvious when you look at the cargo hold. Civics claim 24.5 cubic feet for cargo storage while Corollas lag behind with 17.8 cubic feet.

  2. Fuel Efficiency

Despite a few improvements to the Corolla powertrain, the Civic EX Turbo is still the champ when it comes to fuel economy. The car can earn 33 mpg in the city while the Toyota earns 32 mpg.

On the highway, it stays ahead earning 42 mpg compared to the Corolla’s 41 mpg. In combined driving, the Civic pulls ahead again with 36 mpg vs 35 mpg for the Corolla.

rear
  1. Exclusive Features

The 2023 Honda Civic has some standard features that either aren’t found on the Corolla or require a higher trim level. For instance, every Civic has automatic temperature controls that allow the driver to set the temperature and let the system do the rest. Likewise, there are second-row air ducts in this small sedan, just like you find in an SUV.

Only Honda has road departure assistance. This system utilizes steering cues and automatic braking to assist the driver if the car tries to leave the pavement. Furthermore, the multi-angle rearview camera, which provides 3 views rather than 1, is standard on the Honda Civic only.
