Compact SUV Shopping Guide: Honda CRV vs Hyundai Tucson

In this shopping guide for compact SUVs, we’ll discuss the different aspects of SUV ownership. Do the new Honda CR-V, Tucson, and their hybrids meet all the benchmarks in this new model year? Let’s find out.

    Performance

The 2024 Hyundai Tucson has a 187-horsepower engine that delivers 178 lb-ft of torque. That lags slightly behind the gas-powered CR-V which generates 190 horses and 179 lb-ft.

Plus test drivers complain that the Tucson tends to drone. It’s coarser and less energetic compared to the CR-V.

The CR-V can use its low-end torque to move fast even when accelerating from a stopped position. Handling is excellent thanks to responsive steering and a shock-absorbing suspension.

With either hybrid powertrain, you get a fast-moving SUV that lets you cut back on trips to the gas pump. The CRV Hybrid produces 247 lb-ft of torque which compares well with the Tucson Hybrid’s 256 lb-ft.

    Efficiency

When it comes to fuel economy, the front-wheel drive Tucson does well enough. It earns an EPA estimated 25 mpg city and 32 mpg highway.

The front-wheel drive Honda CR-V does better. It earns an EPA estimated 28 mpg city and 34 mpg highway. That’s a remarkable 30 mpg in combined driving.

Choosing a CR-V Hybrid really makes a big difference when it comes to city gas mileage. Honda hybrids earn up to 43 mpg in city driving while Tucsons earn up to 38 mpg. With all-wheel drive, CR-V Hybrids earn up to 40 mpg in city driving while Tucsons earn up to 37 mpg.

Your mileage will vary depending on how you drive and maintain your vehicle, driving conditions, battery-pack age/condition (hybrid trims) and other factors.

    Cargo Capacity

Compared to its rivals, the Honda CR-V still claims one of the largest cargo holds in its class. It claims more space behind both the first and second rows when compared to the Tucson. Although the Hyundai claims to be built tougher overall, the Honda CR-V actually has the best standard ground clearance.

    Interior Comparison

Of course it’s not just good numbers that make the Honda CR-V such a winning package. It’s also its cabin. High-quality materials and a well-engineered design ensure that it is modern, sleek and spacious. You can even have stain-resistant surfaces to keep the kids from damaging the SUV’s good looks.

These models are very well equipped, even offering some standards you won’t find on the Tucson. This includes Honda’s walk-away smart locks and push button start. The Tucson’s 4.2-inch driver display isn’t as generous at the 7-inch TFT meter on the Honda.

The Honda infotainment system has everything that a modern driver needs. This includes colorful graphics, quick responses, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also has physical buttons and knobs close at hand to simplify important interactions such as the automatic climate controls and audio volume. Driver Assistance and Safety Features

Both the 2024 Hyundai Tucson and the 2024 Honda CR-V have earned Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. However, the CR-V still has some advantages the Tucson doesn’t. For instance, the Honda has ten airbags whereas the Tucson has eight. Plus the newest Honda airbags are more advanced than ever before.

Every Honda CR-V has Traffic Jam Assist, the perfect companion on busy highways like the ones here in Phoenix. Plus Hill Descent Control is a new standard. This low-speed cruise control protects the SUV when it travels down steep descents at speeds from 2-12 mph.

Standard features on both the 2024 Hyundai Tucson and Honda CR-V include lane keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision assistance. Honda also has road departure assistance that can apply the brakes or help with steering if it detects that the CR-V is leaving the marked highway.

    Conclusion

According to Kelley Blue Book, the CR-V is the compact SUV class Best Buy. The critic notes the near-luxury materials in the CR-V cabin. They have given it their top ranking for 2024.

US News and World Report praises the Honda as an impressive overall package. It also praises the CR-V cabin as well-built, handsome, and classy. They especially like the many soft-touch surfaces.

If you want to get the most out of your compact SUV purchase or lease, start with the 2024 Honda CR-V or CR-V Hybrid. It’s still the best choice in its class.
