Honda Pilot vs Acura MDX
How Does the Honda Pilot Challenge the Acura MDX
The 2024 Honda Pilot doesn’t demand the same premium price as the 2024 Acura MDX. These two are corporate cousins with some similarities. However, do those similarities mean that a shopper should choose the Pilot over the more expensive MDX? Here’s what you need to know.
Seating, Spaciousness and Comfort
Passenger space and seating flexibility favor the Honda Pilot. It measures 158.4 cubic feet versus 157.2 cubic feet in the 2024 Acura MDX. Pilots have a standard 8-seat layout that can be exchanged for a 7-seat layout. The MDX has a 7-seat layout only.
Furthermore, the Pilot’s second row seats are well-padded especially when compared to those in the MDX. Lastly, the Pilot 8-seat layout offers a removable center-row middle seat to allow for flexibility in seating and passenger space.
Plus the Pilot makes a better choice than the 2024 Acura MDX when it comes to cargo space. The Acura cargo hold claims only 16.3 cubic feet vs 18.6 cubic feet in the roomier Pilot.
When the seats are folded, the difference continues. The MDX claims 39.1 cubes behind the second row while the Pilot claims a much more generous 48.5 cubes. Once again, the Honda Pilot pulls ahead with 87 cubes behind the first row whereas the MDX can only offer 71.4 cubes.
Note: This review was written just when the 2025 Acura MDX specs were being released. It appears that the MDX will not grow any bigger for the new model year. Therefore, this size comparison can be considered relevant for 2024 and 2025 MDX models.
Pilot vs MDX Interior Amenities
All Hondas are well-made with a good fit and finish. The Pilot is a high quality, modern example of this value packaging. It feels a bit upscale even before you climb the trim ladder. A well-damped suspension and a well-insulated cabin ensure passenger comfort, helping it match the luxury manners of its rival.
The 2024 Acura MDX is deliberately designed for the luxury marketplace. Trims offer high-end materials such as real wood and Milano leather. Considering this is supposed to be a luxury liner, ride quality isn’t as good as it should be, according to critics.
If a shopper wants leather seats or a larger touchscreen, they can choose the Honda EX-L. This also nets them an in-car intercom, known as CabinTalk. Top Honda trims surround the family with luxuries like a panoramic moonroof, ventilated front seats, and a surround-view camera system. A newer available feature is the powered tailgate with a Walk Away Close function.
Honda vs Acura Dash Tech
Pilot dash tech is such a good system that it overcomes any worries about its size. A 7-inch touch screen is matched to a 7-inch digital gauge cluster. Plus the screen has a unique finger rest that helps hold your hand steady when making choices.
Even the entry level model has important standards, such as dual-zone automatic climate controls and push button start. Apple Carplay and Android Auto are wired on the Sport but the EX-L and higher trims enjoy wireless use of these two connectivity features. For more information about trim levels and features, check out this new Honda Pilot review.
Given the price difference, it’s little wonder that the 2024 Acura MDX is endowed with much more. It has a standard 12.3-inch display and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. The problem is that the main display is not a touchscreen. This requires the use of a touchpad which is not nearly as easy to use.
Pilot vs MDX Performance
When it comes to drivability, the Pilot edges out the 2024 Acura MDX in several ways. At first, it looks like the MDX has an edge since it has a 290-horsepower V6 while the Pilot has a 285-horsepower V6. However, both have a 10-speed automatic transmission.
In a US News and World Report comparison, their test drivers note that the Pilot actually has better acceleration. They call the Pilot capable and brisk. They also note its composed ride, well-weighted steering, and good suspension. While city fuel economy is the same, the Pilot earns slightly better highway fuel economy than the MDX.
Price vs Value
As established in the other categories, the 2024 Honda Pilot outsmarts the MDX in a variety of ways. It is a roomier SUV that is better to drive. There’s excellent value in its standard package at every trim level. Even the material quality and fit-and-finish are upmarket.
Of course, the price favors the more affordable Pilot. 2024 Honda Pilot prices start at $37,090 MSRP1. The Honda Pilot Elite price starts at $52,480 MSRP1. 2024 Acura MDX prices start at $50,150 MSRP2 and range up to $73,800 MSRP2 for the Type S with Advance Package.
