Why Surprise?
Surprise, Arizona, started from just one square mile of farmland developed by Flora Mae Statler and her husband in the 1930s. This small plot of farmland was subdivided into smaller plots to make way for the development of houses and other amenities. The city was said to get its name from one of Statler’s statements wherein she said: “I would be surprised if the town ever amounted to much.”
